Yesterday, I wanted to delete some of the old email accounts I had set up in Apple Mail, but I didn’t want to lose access to their emails because they have information I might want to reference later. There are many reasons you’d want to do this — for example, you have a school-provided account where you lose access upon graduation.

The Solution

  • Delete an email account on iPhone and iPad. To delete an email account on iOS, you’ll need to open your Settings app and then do the following. 1) Select Passwords & Accounts. 2) Choose the email account you want to delete. 3) At the bottom, tap Delete Account. 4) Confirm that you want to remove the account by tapping Delete Account.
  • In the Mail app on your Mac, select messages or conversations in the list. All of the messages in a conversation will be deleted. Click the Delete button in the Mail toolbar or press the Delete key. If you delete a mailbox, all of the messages in the mailbox are deleted. You can search for a set of messages to delete.
  • In Mail.app, under Preferences click the Accounts icon. Select your Gmail account. In the Trash section check the box 'Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox' and check the box 'Store deleted messages on the server'. Close the Mail.app Preferences.
  • Visit your Vine settings on the desktop to click the Delete Account link, or email email protected. Apps downloaded, iBooks and Apple Music and iTunes purchases, etc.—to your Apple ID.
  • When you remove an IMAP or Exchange email account from Mac OS X Mail, messages and folders you have moved to local folders on your computer (e.g., in the 'On My Mac' section) will remain, but Mail will no longer try to download additional messages. Messages and folders that remain only on the mail server will no longer be available in Mail.

There are two kinds of mailboxes in Apple Mail — ones that sync with an associated email server, and “On My Mac” mailboxes that only exist on your Mac. Basically, copy all messages into an “On My Mac” mailbox before you delete the account.

First, make a new local mailbox to store the messages after your account is deleted. Go to Mailbox > New Mailbox and this sheet will show up:

Now go to the mailbox you want to archive and select all the messages. Right click your selection and go to Copy To > (The name of your newly created mailbox).

(Instead of copying the messages, you could also move the associated files, since mailboxes are stored as folders under ~/Library/Mail/. But that’ll probably break things subtly — maybe Spotlight indexing or something.)
