Recently I attended a conference where I needed to display a demonstration of what we were doing in VR on the Oculus Quest, the Quest has some great mechanisms for casting to a mobile phone or to a Chromecast device attached to a TV but when it comes to sharing to a laptop there isn’t really a good solution at the moment. Im sure that will all change when they bring out Oculus Link (for a wired connection anyway) but we needed something now.

Yes but you need a VR ready PC running Windows 10 (it won't work on a Mac). You need to patch Virtual Desktop after purchasing the app in the Oculus Store. This can be done easily by using SideQuest. To play Oculus Rift content on Quest 2, install the Oculus App on a compatible gaming computer, then connect your headset using the Oculus Link cable or similar high-quality USB 3 cable. The Oculus Quest is a great piece of tech—being able to play complicated VR games without needing to be tethered to a PC or console is, quite literally, freeing. But it can’t play everything. Oculus picks and chooses what games it allows on the Quest (mostly for performance reasons). However, you can sidestep that limitation with sideloading—a process that allows you to load any game you. Once you see your iPhone screen in the QuickTime window on your Mac, open the Oculus app on your iPhone and initiate casting from the Sharing page (tap the headset/WiFi icon at the top). You can also initiate casting from the Sharing menu on the Oculus Quest headset. Get started in VR. Download and install VR software to a wide range of desktops and laptops. Plug your headset into your PC to configure and customize.

After digging around on some forums and piecing some data together from youtube, forums and reddit I thought i would make a note of the end result here which enables you to use scrcpy, an android screen sharing utility, to share both with a wire but also wirelessly and also enables an easy way to capture video straight to the computer.

Initial Install and Setup

  1. Enable developer mode on your Oculus Quest (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PTFkLnJRLs)
  2. Plug the USB-C cable into your computer and the Quest, this also works with USB to USB-C
  3. If its your first time plugging into this computer you will need to accept the prompt within the device that allows you to access the device from the computer as per below and check the box to always allow if you want to skip this section in the future
  4. For Windows download and unzip the latest build of scrcpy from https://github.com/Genymobile/scrcpy/releases a direct link for the current version when writing this is here: https://github.com/Genymobile/scrcpy/releases/download/v1.10/scrcpy-win64-v1.10.zip
  5. For Mac the application is available in Homebrew. Install it using the following from a terminal window:

Sharing the Screen connected via cable

  1. Open a command prompt (cmd.exe) or and CD into the extracted folder from above
  2. Run the following command:

You will still need a cable to make an initial connection and start the client on the Quest and then you can disconnect and use wirelessly, use the following steps to connect wirelessly:

  1. Follow steps 1-4 above in the setup section
  2. Open a command prompt (cmd.exe) and CD into the extracted folder from above
  3. While the device is connected via a cable run the following to find out what your Quests IP address is in the src section:
    192.168.1.0/24dev wlan0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.198
  4. Now run the following replacing the IP address below (192.168.1.198) as yours:
  5. Disconnect the cable from the PC and with the device disconnected run the command to connect to the device as below

Sharing Window

If everything worked above a new window should appear showing the device screen, you can then maximize this for a better demo window.

Testing was done with variations of the scrcpy command but the above was found to be the best viewing size to enable a good demo.

There is also a great way to capture the screen while mirroring, add the following command options to the end of the scrcpy command above to do this:

Connection Issues

If you get a blank window or are unable to connect when device is plugged in you should be able to run the following command from the same folder above:

If you get the latter then make sure you have enabled developer mode and authorized the device as per step 1-3 above.

Target Machine refused connection when in wireless

If you receive a message like the following: “cannot connect to 192.168.1.198:5555: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. (10061)”

Reconnect the Quest to the computer and go from Step 3 in the wireless connection steps above, this is caused because the client on the quest stopped, normally as you reset the device.

What devices can run Immersed?

Immersed is now available on the Oculus Quest and the Oculus Go. We will release to other XR platforms in the future.

PC, Mac, and Linux are supported for displaying screens in Immersed.

  • PC & Mac supports 'Virtual Displays' where no extra external monitors are required.
  • Currently, Linux only supports plugged-in external monitors (virtual displays coming soon!).
What Mac OS versions are supported?

MacOS 10.14.6+ supports virtual displays for Immersed. We try to support Mac hardware that is up to 5 years old, but the OS needs to be upgraded to 10.14.6+ since 10.13.6 has a fatal OS bug (which Apple never fixed and unfortunately, no longer actively supports).

What Windows OS versions are supported?

Windows 10 64-bit is required. Immersed supports virtual displays on Windows now! The recommended GPU is a NVIDIA Graphics card supported driver v378.66 or later. Intel CPU supported QuickSync is also supported.

What Linux versions are supported?

Immersed supports x64 Ubuntu 16.04+ distributions. Raspberry Pi is not supported but coming soon!

How do I download the Desktop Agent / Streamer app to each of my computers?

Open the Immersed VR app on your VR headset, then in the VR Menu > Computers tab, enter your email address to receive a pairing code for each computer you want to connect to. Then open the subsequent email on the computer you want to connect to.

Why can’t I connect to Immersed?
  • Make sure that you are on the same network for your VR device and your computer.
  • Verify that you are not currently obstructed by firewalls, VPNs, or VMs, since that will interfere with your connection.
  • Ensure that your drivers are updated on your computer.

I have Linux with an Intel CPU, how can I get better performance?

Download and install the MediaSDK which will enable hardware encoding.

My VR app says that I am on an outdated version of the application and won’t let me go any further.
  • Ensure that your VR app and the desktop agent are on the latest versions available.
  • If this problem still persists, uninstall and reinstall your VR app.
  • If it continues after that, please reach out to us at our Immersed Community.
Why is my connection so slow?
  • Verify your WiFi speed, bandwidth, and router performance.
  • If you are a Mac user, consider using Wifi Direct.
  • If you are a Windows user, consider hard-wiring your laptop via Ethernet to your router, and use your PC as a mobile hotspot for your Go/Quest Here.
How can I get multiple monitors in VR?

In Immersed you can use virtual displays (PC & Mac only), plugged-in external monitors, or headless display emulators. Read more about this here for more information.

Why do I get a black screen when it says I'm connected?
  • Make sure your monitor is detected by Windows. Some monitors/TVs need to be turned on to be detected.
  • If you have an Nvidia based laptop, right-click the desktop and click Nvidia Control Panel, then Manage 3D settings. Set the preferred graphics processor to 'High-performance Nvidia processor' globally (see here). Restart your computer once this is changed.
  • If you have an Intel based laptop, make sure you have the latest Intel graphics drivers installed.
  • Try turning off the Windows Night light feature, HDR or uninstalling applications that change the color of your screen such as F.Lux.
Why do I get a black screen when trying to watch Netflix, Hulu or other streaming service?

Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Chrome and some Windows Store apps have DRM that prevent those services from being captured. Using Firefox solves this problem.

Why do I get a green screen when trying to use the webcam feature?

Your Oculus avatar isn't properly set. Go back out to the Oculus Home Settings > Profile > and reset your avatar, then restart the Immersed VR app and your computer.

Why is my mouse getting stuck at the edge and not moving in a way that the screens in Virtual Reality suggest?

Although the screens in your VR workspace give you plenty of flexibility to change the configurations around, the actual movement of the mouse is governed by your display settings. Immersed will try its best to match those settings when you first run Immersed.

By opening the Immersed menu in VR and going to Settings > Arrangement Settings, you can manually match your computer's display arrangement to what arrangement you see in VR.

I see a black screen with a white box around the mouse. What should I do?

First, try restarting your Immersed agent and VR application.

Oculus Quest Apple Mac

On Mac:

  • This typically happens with MacOS Catalina and its new Screen Recording setting.
  • To fix this, simply ensure that Screen Recording is enabled in your Mac’s System Preferences > Security and Privacy > Privacy

On PC:

  • Check to make sure that apps like Flux and Windows Nightlight are disabled. Lenovo Vantage also has a color temperature setting that you may want to disable.
  • If that doesn’t work, verify that no firewalls are blocking data streams through the socket (even if the socket is connected).
  • To troubleshoot, try to disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cables while being connected in the app and see if the monitors are visible again.
Can I use the Immersed Windows Agent with my firewall on?

You might be able to use Immersed with a Windows Agent with your firewall left on if you set your Network to “Private” under your Windows Settings.

Can I share my screen in public rooms?

Immersed does not allow users to share their screen in public rooms to ensure user privacy and safety. If you would like to share your screen(s) with other users, you will need to move into a private room and invite them.

Can I use high-res extended physical monitors with Immersed?

Yes, but this will unnecessarily stress your GPU and your text/UI experience will most likely lag. The best way to fix this is to unplug your physical, high-res monitors and create virtual ones with Immersed.

How do I enable sound to come out of my headset when using Immersed? (Mac Only)

First, make sure you select Enable Audio on the Immersed Desktop Agent on your computer. If that doesn’t do it, also make sure you select Immersed as an output for sound under your sound settings on your computer. How do I activate and use the Immersed Webcam feature?

I’m using the Immersed Webcam for my video-conferencing call and my voice audio isn’t being picked up. Why is that?

Immersed currently doesn’t support input audio from the headset into a video conferencing call. Enabling your sound input on your computer to go through your computer or headphones will solve this.

How do I download the Immersed Agent to my computer?

After you open the Immersed VR app, enter your email in the VR Menu > Computers tab (you might need to click 'Add Another Agent').

I have virtual displays enabled on my Mac, but only see one monitor.

Make sure your Mac’s Display settings has Mirror Displays unchecked.
